By Anwar Hossain; The marauding activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir and some other Islamist parties clashed with police and pro-ruling party people across the country before and after Juma prayers yesterday, resulting in a large number of casualties and arrests.
The Islamists vandalised and torched Gonojagoron Mancha and Shaheed Minar as they protested the Shahbagh movement, which is to demand death penalty for war criminals.
Apart from deaths, scores of people, including police and journalists, were injured in the violence, report published in daily newspapers in Bangladesh.
Chief photo journalist of the Daily Amardesh, Mir Ahmed Miru was bullet injured by police, while he was performing his duty in the area of Baitul Mokarrom Mosque. His colleague took him to hospital and then he went through a surgery.
Arround 02 o clock an armored car of police (APC-9) was passing by Shegun Bagicha, Where the Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) is situated. Journalists from different media were standing there and covering the event. When police saw the journalists they soot couple of rounds towards the journalists. Secretary member of CRAB journalist Aminul Haque Bhuia and some other journalist were injured by these gun shots and taken to the hospital.
Suprime Court reporter of the Daily Amardesh, Soroj Mehedi was beaten and insulted by Rapid Action Battalione (RAB) again and again despite disclosing his identity as journalist and performing his duty. He was performing his journalism works in front of the north gate of Baitul Mokarrom mosque. Injured other journalists are, Farhad Mahmood reporter of NTV, Abdullah Tuhin Senior reporter of Masranga Television, Masudur Rahman Reporter of Gazi TV, Arrifuzzaman Piash reporter ekattor TV, Nurul Islam Reporter of Independent TV, Mamun a photojournalist of Daily Janakantha, Saif Bablu a reporter of Daily Sangbad, Netai tanjan a reporter of the daily Newage, Zee Tv reporter Masudur Rahman, Nurul Islam, cameraman of Independent TV, Zahiduzzaman, Cameraman of ATN Bangla, Polash of Bangla Vision, A nd a cameraman of Bangladesh Television. Many of them holding sustained bullet injury.
In another case in Chittagong, a southern city in Bangladesh, some unidentified people attacked the regional office of the daily Amardesh and the office of Diganta TV. Staffs of these office reports that police and armed cadres of the Awami League lead the attack.
It could be noted that a Senior Correspondent of BD News 24 Sumon Mahbub was attacked by an unidentified car while he was coming back home from covering the protest in Shahbag. A blogger and activist of Shahbagh movment Rajib Haider was found stabbed dead on 15 February, another violent knife attack by unidentified men on the outspoken blogger Asif Mohiuddin in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka on 14 January. Asif survived the attack.
